THE LEOPOLD GATE

The Leopold Gate was build no later than in 1672 as the main representational entrance to the Vyšehrad Citadel. Its name honored Emperor Leopold I. but the gate was probably left unfinished at the time. Its entrances remained walled up and were replaced by a provisional opening in the rampart wall north of the gate where their traces are still visible. The gate became opertional in 1841 with the opening of the Tábor-bound road. At the same time, a wooden bridge over the moat was built which was later replaced by an embankment. The gate consists of the facade wall with a driveway and two small pedestrian gates.
